Apache Song , We Pledge Our Hearts
Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be a shelter to the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other. Now there is no loneliness for you; Now there is no more loneliness. Now you are two bodies, but there is only one life before you. Go now to your dwelling place, to enter into your days together. Joseph M. Marshall III, Keep Going
Old Hawk lapsed into another period of silence, but a longer silence than before. Jeremy, however, was familiar with this habit. All the elders had a way of using silence to speak for them. And the young man did what was expected of him: He waited.

Hope is one of the sparks by which life sustains itself. The ability to hope is one of life's greatest gifts. One unifying feature of Native American belief is the concept of the "Red Road," though each tribe and nation also has its own sacred name for it. Black Elk speaks of the Red Road in the book The Sacred Pipe. In Mi'kmaq, the "way of truth" is called agulamz. In Cherokee, the "way of good" is dohi (do-hi). The Hopi speak of the good red road that leads to a world that is healthy and safe for raising children. The Navajo call it the "the beauty way," which I have learned to live more effectively by returning to my own traditions.

In Algonquin life, as in many cultures around the world, smudging is used to purify oneself, as if bathing in the smoke. Its calm energy washes away our confusion and self-hate. Purification is the first step in any ceremony or healing process. It slows you down and helps you enter the timeless world of spirit.

Like the colored prayer flags of Tibetans, Sherpas, and other Mongolian traditions, these ribbons or the more traditional strips of dyed cotton, are tied to living trees and bushes, and left out for some time, to blow in the wind. The wind blows them and frees the prayers to fly upwards to heaven.
